TO SAVE FUEL AND BOOST EV RANGE
Amid rising fuel prices, Michelin, the world’s leading tire company and manufacturer of life-changing composites and experiences, underscores the critical role of tires in energy efficiency, offering guidance to help reduce fuel consumption in internal combustion vehicles and maximize driving range in electric vehicles.
Modern car tires impact fuel consumption more than many drivers realize. Michelin’s approach to fuel economy is embodied in its "Total Performance" philosophy, which aims to improve multiple tire characteristics simultaneously – such as performance, safety, mileage, and energy efficiency.
Reduce Energy Consumption with Lower Rolling Resistance
Up to 20 to 30 percent of fuel of a vehicle is consumed simply to overcome rolling resistance, due to the deformation of the tires on the road. When tires have high rolling resistance, the engine must work harder – and therefore burn more fuel – to keep the vehicle moving. The EU tire label highlights these differences with efficiency ratings from A (most efficient) to E (least efficient). The gap between these efficiency classes can mean up to 7.5 percent more fuel use, which translates to as much as 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers, based on an average consumption of seven liters.
Michelin’s modern premium tires demonstrate that energy efficiency, safety, and comfort can go hand in hand – saving fuel while delivering excellent grip and long service life. The MICHELIN Primacy 5 energy achieves the highest European A-label rating for exterior noise, wet grip, and rolling resistance, while also offering exceptional longevity that translates into more mileage for both fuel and electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 energy carries double A-label ratings for wet grip and rolling resistance, combining dynamic handling and enhanced driving pleasure with reduced energy consumption.
Save Money by Refueling and Recharging Less
With Michelin’s latest tire innovations – particularly the MICHELIN Primacy 5 energy and the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 energy that achieve A-class EU label ratings for energy efficiency, drivers can reduce fuel consumption by up to 6% (around 0.3 liters per 100 kilometers). For electric vehicles, these tires can extend driving range by up to 10% compared to C-class tires. In independent DEKRA tests, the MICHELIN Primacy 5 energy, named “Tire of the Year” at the Tire Technology Expo 2026 in Hanover, outperformed leading competitors by up to 40% in mileage.
More Tips for Saving Fuel While Driving
Tire choice is an important lever to save money, but it is not the only one. Other effective practices include:
Maintain appropriate tire pressure: Even 0.5 bar too low increases fuel consumption. It is recommended to check tire pressure at least once a month when tires are cold.
Drive at moderate speeds: Driving at moderate, steady speeds significantly improves fuel efficiency. For example, reducing highway speed from higher cruising speeds to around 80-90 km/h can cut fuel consumption by up to 25%, while many vehicles achieve their best efficiency at cruising speeds around 80–90 km/h.
Drive smoothly: Avoid quick acceleration, shift up early, and coast gently before traffic lights to save fuel.
Remove excess weight: Clear out any unnecessary items from the car, as every extra 25 kilograms reduces fuel economy by roughly 1%, with a higher impact on smaller vehicles.
Michelin encourages all drivers to take part in overcoming the ongoing energy crisis. With the right tires, proper maintenance, and smart driving, each driver can not only save significantly on fuel costs while ensuring safety and driving pleasure, but also contribute to the energy resilience and economic strength of their nation.
